the tree has grown weak
its roots no longer thrive for the life they once killed for
it has grown brittle and frail
but it’s leaves still face up
the sun still shines through its branches
but has not been taken down
it still stand strong
watching the kids play
watching the kids grow
grow old like the tree
watching the innocence being taken
like the trees was by every leave ripped off
what made you so weak
is it old age
or is it because of all the storms you faced
are you tired

the shoes that show my journey
the shoes that show whether or not I can afford the next pair
the shoes that can determine if I will go places
if I will ever make it anyway
they show my past
they show my future
they show my struggles
and decide where I belong
in the high places with the wealthy
or the dirt with the poor
they decide who I am as a person
but they do not define me as a person
do not judge me
by looking at the fabric beneath my feet
do not say what I can or can not do
but how much money I have in my pocket

My last photo, is a picture of my playbills, which are defiantly a part of me. Musical theatre has been and always will be a part of my life. It is what makes me me. It has gotten me through the worst of times, and has given me hope when I had none left. It is the way I express myself. It is a way to escape from everything and be something completely different from who you are. Musical theatre has been the only place where I feel like I’m doing something right, it’s something I’m good at. If you were to look at my life and the people I’m friends with, it is all influenced by musical theatre. I met some of my closest friends there, and that’s where I plan to spend the rest of my life doing. When I found the theatre, I found a home.

This is a picture of the tree outside of my house, that has been here for my whole life. Trees represent strength and wisdom. This tree is a symbol of life, maybe even my life. This tree has been here for as long as I can remember, spreading and growing each year like myself. I’ve seen kids get their toys and balls stalk up in this tree, and watch them cry for their parents to get it down. That can be life too, the obstacles life has. This tree has been through storms where I thought it wasn’t going to last, but it still held strong. Maybe I am so attached to this tree, because this tree is me.

Freudian/Psychoanalytic Theory

This is a picture of my little brother throwing a tantrum. He is usually very sweet, but when he doesn’t get his way, he does this. This is defiantly influenced by his id. His superego has lost, and his bad side takes over. He can be so sweet, but when he wants or desires something, he has to have it, which is not very good since he is only five. I feel as if kids have a very strong id, because they are young and impulsive. All kids have a stronger id than most adults. Adults can control their ids a little easier than children, but only a little bit.

New Historicism

n this photo, I took a picture of technology. Technology has changed today’s world tremendously. If you look back by even ten years, everything has changed. Most people own a phone or a computer and it has completely change the way the world acts and communicates. You used to knock on your best friends door and ask if they were home, now you text them. If they lived far away, you wrote them a letter, you couldn’t just call. Before, you had to go to the library to get information, now you only have to go on the internet. Would are ancestors be proud or ashamed? That’s the question, have we changed for the better or for worse.

Critical Race and Ethnic Theory

This is a picture of Tiana and Charlotte, both in Disney. The setting was In New Orleans , when race was a big deal, during the jazz period. They were best friends while they were children, and continued to grow up being best friends. During this time, it was unheard of. Charlotte was also rich, while Tiana was poor. Tiana had to work for everything she has ever gotten, and Charlotte got everything handed to her. This seems to be a big stereotype. In this movie, even-though Charlotte was spoiled, she was sincere and sweet and did not fit the stereotypical rich white girl. Disney brought something new, and defiantly caught my eye for the race lens.

his is a picture of my shoes. You can tell obviously how beat up they are. It is obvious that I am not in the upper class, but the middle class. You can tell what these shoes have been through a lot and are ripping apart. Being in the middle class can be a struggle in my family most of the time. Everyone is always telling me to get new shoes, since I wear these very often…but I can’t afford new shoes. Money is very tight in middle class, and you can’t waste it on new shoes. The Marxism theory is very important in everyone’s lives. It can effect your future and stop you form achieving your dreams.

Feminist/Gender/Sexual Orientation Theory

This is a picture of my mom making dinner. I am looking at this picture through the Feminist lens. It is the stereotype that all women belong in the kitchen, that all women are expected to cook and clean and do housework. Even though most women actually do all these things, it should not be expected form them. It is sexist to think that that’s all women can do, and you should not think that way. Women are expected to be perfect. To have good looks and be intelligent and kind. There are impossible standards for women, and women should not be put under the pressure into becoming the barbie doll type model. Women and men should be equal in the world, through everything. In the work place, at home, in public. Women are just as important in today’s society as men.

Journal 1: What is Critical theory?

Critical Theory is an approach understand and overcome the ideas of culture and society through literature. There are seven theories Critical Lenses. These lenses are important to use why reading texts because they help us understand the texts more and gain a better knowledge than before. It helps us discover a more deeper meaning to the texts, an really grasp what the author was trying to say in the texts as well. These lenses help us understand society and culture more. It isn’t looked through just one lense, it is looked by many lenses with different meanings. There are many different cultures and races and all different kinds of texts, and the lenses help us understand where they are coming from. The Critical lense I feel most connected to is the Feminist/Gender/Sexual Orientation Lense. I relate to this because I am a women, so I have experienced sexist remarks and texts. It makes you look at things at a different perspective  because being a women, we are always discriminated against and this lense helps.
